HAYLE FILM CLUB:

Spotlight today Thursday June 23 at 7.30pm.

This intelligent film covers a journalistic investigation of historic proportions: the exposure by the Spotlight team at the Boston Globe of child abuse in the Catholic Church in 2002. The film follows the year-long investigation from the moment the new editor (Liev Schreiber) suggests a story about a local priest to the team (Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, John Slattery), continuing through church stonewalling and the 9/11 attacks to the exposure of nearly 100 clergy and a systematic church cover-up. Avoiding diversions into the reporters' lives, or cheap flashbacks, the action stays rigorously with the growing story. The film and its screenplay have won dozens of awards internationally, including BAFTAs and Oscars.

128 min, rated 15, and there will be running subtitles for the Boston accent.
