Dissolution of Praze Hayle ChoirIt is with great regret that we have to announce the dissolution of the Praze Hayle Male Voice Choir. The choir last met in August 2019 and the intervening period has been spent in distributing the choir’s assets, both financial and physical; This has now been completed. The choir was formed by the joining together of the Praze and Hayle Male Voice Choirs and 25performed successfully for nearly two decades. However, a declining membership meant that the choir could no longer perform the 4-part Male Voice Choir music that formed its repertoire and closure, sadly, became inevitable. read more »

Hayle has again achieved excellent results in the South West in Bloom competition 2019. The S.W. awards were presented at the ceremony, held in Newquay, in early October.
This year, we were, again, entered in the Preece Cup competition, which is based on assessments made for Hayle overall, and there were also 21 entries in the ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ judging, for specific projects and developments.Chair Richard Barber was delighted, if not a little surprised, that Hayle was awarded Gold Standard overall in this year’s Preece Cup. read more »

John also made several individual sightings of the very rare Large Tortoiseshell butterfly near his home at Connor Downs over several years in the late 1990’s through to about 2006, raising hopes that this species may have survived over several generations in west Cornwall, following a probable small immigration of this extinct species. He is also accredited with proving a Painted Lady butterfly can overwinter as an adult butterfly in Cornwall (1997/1998) following a mark & release experiment by him close to his home near Hayle. Finally, his patience was rewarded by a fortunate sighting of the largest of all our migrants, a Monarch, on 12th November, 2002 at Angarrack on a pub roof! read more »

Back again in the second week of July and a new location was explored at Rinsey, east of Mounts Bay. Again many Painted Ladies were on the wing together with Meadow Browns and Gatekeepers. On the 15th a Comma was seen in the village of Angarrack near Hayle and another was seen later on the site of Wheal Alfred enjoying the numerous Buddleia trees. Mentioned: read more »

In 1888, the National Explosive works were established on Upton Towans (giving it the alternative name "Dynamite Towans"). Originally built to supply the local mining industry, it soon grew to supply the military and, during the First World War, employed over 1500 people. The remote location on the Towans proved a wise move as there were a number of accidents resulting in explosions.

It is anticipated that this site will be formally transferred to the town council later in the year, in accordance with the Section 106 agreement that was put in place when the planning permission for the development of the houses was originally passed. The developers of the site are also obliged to give the town council the sum of £30,000 for the purpose of enhancing the immediate area.
The council wishes to consult with the local community and asks you to submit your ideas for what you would like to see at that spot. Given its proximity to the main road, no consideration will be given to suggestions of a play area but all other proposals are welcome. read more »
