A 49-year-old man has died after being pulled unconscious from waters off the coast near Hayle.

The man, who has not been named, is the 11th person to have lost their life on the county's coast this year. The emergency services were called to Bluff Cove, Hayle, just after 4pm on Friday after reports that a had been rescued from the water.

"A 49-year-old man was taken to Treliske Hospital by air ambulance where he sadly passed away," a spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said. "A file has been prepared for the coroner." No further details of the incident have been released.

Last Tuesday, Port Isaac RNLI lifeboat, coastguards and the rescue helicopter from Newquay, were scrambled to Dunderhole Point, near Tintagel, after reports that a man was in trouble trying to rescue his dog from the sea The man, who was later named as Trevor Priest from Stratford-upon-Avon, was winched to safety and flown to Royal Cornwall hospital but could not be saved.

It is understood that he was holidaying with family in St Teath, Bodmin. Tributes to Mr Priest have been left online, including one from Jacqueline Washington who wrote: "Words cannot express. Trevor was such a fabulous man and was a lovely neighbor to my parents.

"It was only a few weeks ago he attended my dads funeral. Rest in Peace Trevor. You were very special." Another, Francesca Magari, added: "I'm so sorry to hear about this. Trevor Priest was an absolute legend and such a lovely bloke. This breaks my heart. Love and prayers and thoughts to your family at this sad sad time."

Three days before the tragedy at Tintagel, a diver died after getting into at Porthkerris, a popular scuba diving spot near The Lizard. He was airlifted to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro but was later pronounced dead.

Two other divers were taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth for specialist recompression treatment after a rapid ascent in the sea. They were released the same day. The victim is believed to be a 67-year-old from Essex. Police said the dead man's next of kin had been informed.
