Consultation Summary

Cornwall Council is proposing to reduce the overall road width by realigning the kerb line and providing a wider footway on the western side of Abbey Hill. In addition to these works a pedestrian refuge at the northern end of Abbey Hill will be provided.

Background:

Abbey Hill has been programmed for routine surface dressing at the end of July/beginning of August. As a result the opportunity has arisen to narrow the existing central hatch markings as this can be amended in conjunction with the surface dressing. This proposal will reduce the overall road width following the narrowing of the central hatch markings.

Scheme Objectives

The existing road width and central hatch markings are excessively wide. This means that motorists often cut across the hatching when negotiating the right hand bend on Abbey Hill. The pedestrian refuge will primarily provide a dedicated crossing point to assist pedestrians to cross the road to the continuous footway on the western side of Abbey Hill. As the footway is not continuous on the eastern side of the hill this will remove the need for pedestrians to walk in the carriageway. A secondary function of the refuge is it will visually restrict the lane width to motorists travelling towards Abbey Hill from the St. Ives direction and will in turn help to reduce entry speeds to the left hand bend.
