If you want to protecting the community and even save lives there there are a variety of ways to land the perfect job across Devon and Cornwall.

From working to ensure beach bathers are safe in the sea to being on call for emergencies at homes and along the coastline, charities and services are looking to bolster their teams today.

From volunteer roles to fully paid jobs, here's a look at the range of opportunities currently available.

Firefighter

Many stations need on-call firefighters (Image: ugc)

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service and Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service currently have a shortage of people who are able to turn out and help in an emergency.

This is highlighted as being particularly true in small towns and rural areas, due to fewer people living and working in their local villages.

If you are interested in becoming an on-call firefighter role, there are a couple of things to bear in mind. Applicants must live or work near a community fire station and be able to get there within four minutes of a call.

Flexibility is also key, as there is no way of knowing when an emergency may happen, so being self-employed or working for a community-minded employer is preferred. You don't need any formal qualifications to apply as the service undertakes various tests to select the necessary skills and experience. Applicants must also be aged at least 17 and a half years.

Aside from gaining satisfaction from helping those in need, the service notes that the position offers "an exciting and rewarding career" with the opportunity to earn between £5,000 and £7,000 per year.

Of the 31 fire stations in Cornwall, only four are not recruiting on-call firefighters. To find out more and apply click here.

In Devon and Somerset 64 of the stations are seeking on-call firefighters. More details visit the website.

You could become a lifeguard (Image: RNLI)

Several seasonal lifeguard roles are up for grabs across Cornwall with the RNLI. Being a lifeguard will see you working on the front line of lifesaving at some of the county's most popular seaside spots.

There are paid and volunteer roles currently advertised, the former offering a wage of £8.75 to £11.04 per hour.

The job offers a variety of responsibilities dependent on the location. From resort beaches to semi-rural surf destinations, lifeguards can operate from static units or with patrols. They may also require the use of quad bikes, four-wheel drives, jet skis, and rescue boats.

At times challenging and always rewarding, no two days are the same, so you’ll need to be focused, vigilant and proactive. But more than that, the RNLI is looking for approachable lifeguards who enjoy meeting people and helping them stay safe.

There are four different levels of lifeguard, from newly qualified right through to senior lifeguard. We’ll provide you with excellent training opportunities to help you progress as you gain experience. At all levels, you’ll learn valuable skills for your future career, at the RNLI or elsewhere.

There are seasonal and casual vacancies at a number of locations including Padstow, Saltash, Perranporth, Hayle, Newquay and Westward Ho!

There are also some volunteer lifeguard support positions, to assist the lifeguards and be part of daily lifeguard operations on the beach. You will need at least a valid lifeguard support award to carry out this role.
