There have been 23 coronavirus cases confirmed in the past week across Devon and Cornwall, official Government figures show.

The figures show that an average of just over three new cases a day are being confirmed across the region and include both pillar 1 data from tests carried out by the NHS and pillar 2 data from commercial partners.

Of the 23 new cases, 16 of them were confirmed in the previous seven days, with seven being more historical cases that have been added to the dataset, included one for which the test took place back in early March.

Last Thursday, the Government dashboard for the first time included both pillar 1 and pillar 2 tests by local authority, so no direct comparison can be made as to how many new cases were confirmed in the previous seven days.

Information though is now available by the data of the specimen, with 16 new cases having been confirmed in the last seven days so far, although data from the most recent days may be subject to change.

The previous week (between June 26 and July 2) saw 27 cases confirmed, with the week between (June 19 and June 25) having seen 19 new cases.

In the last seven days, there have been six cases confirmed in Cornwall, the last on July 7, one in Torbay, on July 5, and four in Plymouth, the last on July 6, by the date of specimen.

East Devon has seen two new cases, the last on July 6, with one in Mid Devon on July 6, and two in Teignbridge, on July 4. No new cases were confirmed in Exeter, North Devon, the South Hams, Torridge or West Devon, with the last new cases in those region having occurred on June 20, June 18, June 23, July 1 and June 26 respectively.

Across the whole of the South West, there have been 74 cases confirmed in the last seven days, down from 96 in the seven days prior to that, with all 29 of the districts in the region, which stretches from Cornwall to Dorset and Gloucestershire, reporting an average of less than two new cases a day.

And across the South West, the number of people in hospital with COVID-19 has dropped by a third in the previous week, going from 48 on July 3 down to 33 on July 10.

Torridge remains the district in England with the lowest positive case infection rate of anywhere, with the South Hams 3rd, North Devon 4th, West Devon 5th, East Devon 8th, Teignbridge 10th, Cornwall 11th, Exeter 15th, Torbay 21st, Plymouth 39th, and Mid Devon 41st out of the 315 English council districts.

Torridge has also had the fewest number of cases of any of the districts, with West Devon 2nd, and the South Hams and North Devon also in the bottom five.

In total, Torridge has had just 50 positive cases, with 71 in West Devon, 98 in the South Hams, 119 in North Devon, 206 in Mid Devon and Teignbridge, 211 in East Devon, 234 in Exeter, 273 in Torbay, 660 in Plymouth and 894 in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

The COVID-19 cases are identified by taking specimens from people and sending these specimens to laboratories around the UK to be tested. If the test is positive, this is a referred to as a lab-confirmed case.

Confirmed positive cases are matched to ONS geographical area codes using the home postcode of the person tested.

The data is now shown by the date the specimen was taken from the person being tested and while it gives a useful analysis of the progression of cases over time, it does mean that the latest days’ figures may be incomplete.

Cases received from laboratories by 12:30am are included in the counts published that day. While there may have been new cases of coronavirus confirmed or people having tested positive, those test results either yet to reach PHE for adding to the dataset or were not received in time for the latest daily figures to be published.
